ONE STAR is for the poor transfer. Take my word for it - buying this so called “remastered” classic film is a waste of money. I opted for this more expensive edition thinking I’d get a decent print. Instead, it was of such poor quality - constantly breaking up, and at time completely stopping, I gave up watching. An old copy I have from TV is far superior.

Amazon should be ashamed they listed this item for sale.

Informative documentary about our food supply. Includes information about the Genetically Modified food industry, and farmers who try to resist GMO and get sued by corporations. A different DVD which shows the destructive nature of GMO / chemical farming on both the farmers and the soil, …and shows an active solution taking place in India is “How to Save the World”. Watch “The Future of Food” first, and then the enlightening “How to Save the World”, for a incredible real world solution that is happening now. Both are entertaining and can educate you on what is really happening to food and farmers in the USA and other countries!

The Future of Food documents what is currently going on with the food supply in the US. Monsanto, a multinational corporation who was formerly in the pesticide business (agent orange, ddt) is now one of the biggest seed suppliers in the world. And not just any seed, it’s genetically engineered for a number of purposes.

Monsanto has been suing farmers who have not bought seed from them but end up with it growing in their fields from no fault of their own. In one very well known case a farmer, Percy Schmeiser, was told by his neighbor that the neighbor’s truck had a hole it’s tarp and a lot of Monsanto’s’ ’round up ready’ seed was dumped on his field. Monsanto tried to sue him (and many other farmers - google and you’ll see links to many of the cases) and he spent his life savings fighting them. He just recently won his case after 10 years!

The film has wonderful and informative interviews with Andrew Kimbrell, director of the center for Food Safety, Fred Kirshenman, a well known sustainable farmer, and a number of experts and scientists who document first off how GE food was pushed on the American people with no disclosure and no testing as well as the devastating potential for destruction with messing with our food supply for profit.

There’s a lot we can do. Support small farmers and farmers market’s. Join a community supported agriculture program where you get a box of fresh from the field organic fruits and vegetables each week. We also need to demand labeling. Right now we don’t know which foods we buy are genetically altered and which aren’t. If our food is labeled we can make informed choices.

I highly recommend this film - it’s important information for us all.

The Clone Wars (Vol I- DVD) animated series begins to bridge the gap between Episodes II and III with non-stop action! We get to see some of the battles raging on the different planets throughout the Star Wars galaxy. The series also alludes to the growing ‘rage’ inside Anakin, as he faces off against a formidable opponent. Star Wars fans, this is a must for your collection! Enjoy this DVD, and all its extras, as you wait patiently for “Revenge of the Sith.”

An outstanding animated set of adventures, Star Wars-Clone Wars Vol. 1, brings to the screen 20 three-minute war stories from the Clone Wars.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Star Wars: Clone Wars! Click Here

Set between Episodes Two and Three, the film sheds light on events involving some of the most impressive jedi knights, including an amazing performance by Mace Windu, an underwater battle with Master Fisto (!), and of course Anakin Skywalker in a battle worth of song among others.

The cast have truly outdone themselves with their performances, which are AMAZING to say the least! All the actors, without exceptions, give it their 100% and it really shows (the animation does come ALIVE) allowing for a highly entertaining movie that can be watched over and over again.

The setting, the plot, the dialogues, the battle sequences, and the music are all EXCELLENT!

In short, Star Wars-Clone Wars Vol. 1 is a movie definitely worth watching and one to seriously consider adding to your Star Wars collection! (The film establishes a GREAT cliffhanger for the sequel, which is also a “must-see!”)

Once Upon A Forest is about a mole, badger and hedgehog who go to Ferling’s class taught by Cornelius, played by Michael Crawford. The movie starts off showing the animals getting ready for the days lesson and arriving at school at Cornelius’s house in Dapplewood.

Cornelius proceeds to show the class his life’s work, the Flapper wind thing. It is a model that flies around the house and breaks. He plans on someday making the real thing and they set out for the days journey.

While walking around in the forest to get to the surprise one of the animals finds a street and runs back into the forest at the same time a vehicle is going by tossing a glass out the window.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Once Upon a Forest! Click Here

The animals want to know what that was, Cornelius tells them to get out of the road, and they go to the water to ride in the canoe. They take turns rowing and getting all wet. Upon getting out of the water Cornelius notices the quietness of the forest and they hurry home.

What happened was another vehicle hit the glass in the road causing it to turn over and emit some gas fumes into the forest. The animals make it to Michelle’s house and smell the fumes. Michelle enters to find her mommy and daddy while the others wait on Cornelius to think of what to do next. Abigail goes in to pull out Michelle, whose parents did die.

They go to higher ground, which is at Cornelius’s house. There Cornelius, who is Michelle’s uncle, places Michelle in bed and tells a story of when he was a child and the same thing happened to his parents and he was the only one who got out.

This is a great family movie that shows the animals getting along for the sole purpose of helping another. It shows their instincts in taking care of themselves while on their journey.

Children will see life through the eyes of animals and how leaving glass on the street can cause a flat tire and damage to the animals in the woods. The three classmates grew up in the two days that they searched for the meadow and made their teacher proud.

What more could you want for a child to see than a life lesson while watching animals, listening to music and the colorful scenery.

I admit that I was a bit turned off by the possibility of a sappy environmental message. But if you are too, give it a moment. Most of the animated stories aimed at your kids involve “evil villains” and probably a decent amount of physical conflict. My daughter’s at a stage where she is very sensitive to “evil” characters, so I decided to check the movie out. Yes, Leonard is right - nothing very memorable… for an adult. My 3-yr-old child saw this film a month ago and is still acting out scenes from it and making me play characters. And it’s true that there is the sappy environmentalism of animals tut-tutting the way those humans act. But I’ll give away a tiny surprise. The humans turn out to be not all bad.

“Key Largo” is one of the great film dramas. It is truly refreshing, in this day of “in your face” violence and sex, to see a film that builds tension almost entirely through dialog and characterization. This is one of Humphrey Bogart’s most underrated performances. Bogart plays a returning WWII veteran who has become somewhat jaded by his war experience. He comes to south Florida to visit the father (Lionel Barrymore-Mr. Potter in “It’s a Wonderful Life) of a dead war buddy, who owns a hotel and is living with his son’s widow, played by Lauren Bacall. Bacall, especially, is noteworthy in that she has very few speaking parts and communicates fear and anger primarily through looks, glances, and body movements. This is in contrast to her previous roles (”To Have and Have Not” and “The Big Sleep”) in which was glamorous and sensual. In a way she is barely recognizable here. Edward G. Robinson is perfect as the insecure and easily manipulated gangster, Johnny Rocco. The entire film centers around Rocco and his cronies taking over the hotel and keeping the above characters hostage during a hurricane. The movie becomes a psychological cat and mouse game between Bogart and Robinson. At first, Bogart’s “head” tells him to watch out for himself, but later he follows his “heart” in attempting to protect and free the hostages. Bogart is understated in communicating a man who is psychologically wounded by the war and who questions the very values he and others fought and died for. By the end of the film he becomes a heroic figure, but not in the mundane or facile sense. He is heroic in that he sublimates his own feelings of survival for that of the greater good and recognizes the need for one man to fight the evil represented by Rocco. This is directed by John Huston (”The Maltese Falcon”) and in spite of the fact that all the action takes place in just a few rooms, his direction is dynamic and action packed.

Somewhat enigmatically, the text only “Behind the Scenes” Special Feature on the KEY LARGO dvd tells us that director John Huston was so angry with producer Jerry Wald for forcing him to deal with the “delicacies” in Maxwell Anderson’s stage play of the same name that he barred him from the set. What’s more likely is that co-screenwriters Huston and Richard Brooks gutted Anderson’s play of most everything but the title, took a few veiled swipes at the House Un-American Committee, and threw an incredible cast at it.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Key Largo! Click Here

Claire Trevor won the Best Supporting Oscar for her role as a boozy, faded nightclub singer, but Edgar G. Robinson steals the show. He’s simply wonderful as Johnny Rocco, an old gang lord (reportedly styled after real-life gangster Lucky Luciano) with happy dreams of returning to the old days - maybe they’ll reinstate prohibition! Lionel Barrymore plays a crusty old hotel keeper, Lauren Bacall his daughter-in-law, and Humphrey Bogart is the ex-Army officer blown into town to tell the widowed Bacall, and Barrymore, about her late husband’s heroic military career.

This was Bacall’s third movie with Bogart, and they seem to fall in love by osmosis this time around. Bogart plays the disillusioned vet with quiet dignity, which works for the movie’s sake but robs the audience of the opportunity to see any high sparks ignite between his and Robinson’s character.

Ah well. We can’t have everything. This is still a great movie, one of Bogart’s most underrated gems.

I snatched this DVD off the shelf the day of its release, and for good reason. “House of 1000 Corpses” is absolutely the greatest grisly horror film I’ve ever seen! Watching the movie in its original theatrical premiere gave me the thrills and chills, and I don’t even listen to any of Rob Zombie’s music. What makes this film quite excellent is that it has finally reawakened the celluloid corpse of the horror genre; before this, Hollywood has churned out an obscene number of dull PG-13 teeny bopper flicks, including “Scream” and “I Know What you Did Last Summer.” While paying homage to the low-budget shockfests of the 1960’s and 70’s, Zombie gives “House” a post-millenium twist with acidic photo negativity and twisted montages incorporating topless strippers, mutilated cadavers and snippets from campy black-and-white monster movies (provided by Dr. Wolfenstein’s Creature Feature Marathon). Rob Zombie himself commented that a majority of “House’s” gritty home video footage was shot through a hand-held camera in parts of Zombie’s own basement! Also notice how NO high-tech computer effects were used; because “House” is set in the rural American South in 1977, the makers intended to stay true to that period (not to mention achieve realistic gore without overspending the budget). And of course the larger-than-life characters of “House of 1000 Corpses” are just as memorable as those in “The Rocky Horror Picture Show.” In fact, in the DVD’s featurette, Sig Haig happily confessed how he would like to see this film presented in any tiny theatre where audiences can yell back at the screen! Who wouldn’t love to visit Captain Spaulding’s Museum of Monsters and Madman and sample a bag of tasty fried chicken? Would you dare purchase a ticket to the scary Murder Ride and learn the legend of Dr. Satan? Or how about the psychotic Spiderfly family, who light up the flickering candles on Halloween night and fiendishly participate in a gruesome celebration (one in which cheerleaders are gagged, tied up and tortured)? Better yet, when was the last time a cinema fanatic witnessed a cult ritual of blood and fire, dedicated to the famous Dr. Satan himself?! Although I enjoy watching this film from beginning to end, I do have a few favorite moments. The first that immediately comes in my head is none other than the creepy Murder Ride, complete with cross-shaped tombstones, animatronic zombies and the awesome Captain telling the tragic tales of real-life serial murderers, molesters and cannibals (most notably Ed Gein, the notorious killer whose farmhouse was borrowed for “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.”) I love the part when Baby (Sherie Moon) struts her way to the stage in her glittering evening gown, lip-synching to “I Wanna Be Loved by You” like a cute Hollywood starlet. Such bizarre charm! Yet another moment that stands out in my mind is when the sadistic Otis (Bill Moseley) lops off a victim’s right hand with an axe…all while the funky Commodore’s hit “She’s a Brick House” blares on the radio! Mother Firefly (played by the voluptuous Karen Black) sort of reminds me of a blond, venomous Sharon Osbourne from the South!

Buy,Download, Or Stream House of 1000 Corpses! Click Here

You kiddies will be happy to know that actors Sid Haig, Sherie Moon AND Bill Moseley actually host the different menus on the DVD; after returning to their delightfully creepy roles in the film, they each provide color commentary DIRECTLY TO YOU! Unfortunately, the list of extras DOES NOT include any hardcore deleted scenes, but if you carefully listen to Zombie’s commentary, you might get just a hint as to which kind of footage was edited out. The interviews segment is quite interesting to watch too. I think I like the part when Sid Haig (clown greasepaint and all) chose “House of Wax” as his most favorite horror movie. Each interview even unveils a brand new character action figure!

I can hardly wait to see what Rob Zombie has in store for us in the future, when he prepares to unleash an even more violent sequel! RIP Dennis Fimple.

I went into this movie expecting to see a fun-filled throwback to the classic drive-in slasher movies of the 70’s and that is exactly what i got. This movie was awesome. Unwanted by two major studios, Lion’s Gate gave Rob Zombie the chance of a lifetime. He wasn’t trying to make the most amazing horor film of all time, he was trying to pay tribute to classics such as: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Last House on the Left, and The Hills Have Eyes. Taking a classic plot: a group of kids is stranded in the middle of nowhere, onlt to be terrorized and brutalized by the family from hell, he twists it into a fun-filled nightmare. The family in this movie is one of the funiest and most terrifying families you will ever see on film. This family lures unsuspecting passers-by with the youngest member of the family (played by Zombie’s real life girlfriend) and then proceeds to torture, eviscerate, sodomize and do just about everything you can to someone. The actors delivered as well. Sid Haig is hilarious as the foul-mouthed Captain Spaulding. The acting is corny, as well as it should be. Some might get bored after the hilarious opening scene. The first two thirds of the movie introduce the characters and the disgusting family. The final one third of the movie is a terrifying nightmare that morphs from a gore-filled slasher film to a science fiction acid trip. The ending might make some mad, but I found it fitting to the whole plot. I had heard a lot of hype saying how violent this film was. It is to a point. I am a gore hound so I din’t find this as violent as Dead Alive or Cannibal Ferox(One of the sickest movies of all time) and the r rating takes a good chunk of the film away from the viewer. I can’t wait for an unrated director’s cut to be released

Summary: The 2008 Israeli film ‘Lemon Tree’ stars the alluring Hiam Abbass in the role of Salma Zidane a Palestinian widow struggling to maintain her home and lemon tree orchard against the encroachment of her new neighbor Israel Naron (Doron Tavory), the Israeli Prime Minister. The high ranking official sees the orchard as an imminent danger to his families safety, a place where terrorist and snipers can move freely about hidden behind the foliage. Within a matter of days a fence and imposing guard towers rise between the two properties robbing Salma of her privacy and personal space. If that wasn’t enough problems escalate to the point where the continued existence of the lemon trees are threatened. Using his political power and influence the Prime Minister plans to have the orchard destroyed thus threatening Salma’s only source of income. Can one lone Palestinian woman fight and defeat the “Powers that Be” while maintaining her dignity and self reliance in a male dominated society?

Critique: ‘Lemon Tree’ explores on of the most reoccurring themes in Israeli films, the theme of boundaries. The lemon tree orchard symbolizes more than just a physical buffer between hostile neighbors. It is a boundary between rich and poor, the powerful and the powerless, Jew and Arab, male and female. While the storyline moves along rather slowly the introspective nature of the film more than makes up for the pace. As the viewer gains deeper and deeper glimpses into the lives and concerns of both households one begins to sympathize not only with Salma but with Mira (Rona Lipaz-Michael), the Prime Minister’s wife who finds herself torn between the opposing positions of the two rivals.

I’m a big fan of Hiam Abbass and as always she delivers a stellar performance. She’s strong, defiant and determined while at the same time retaining a sense of sensitivity, vulnerability and feminism that is irresistible. Well worth a watch or two. Another film you might enjoy if you like this one is ‘The Syrian Bride’.

You can tell that the folks at Anchor Bay Entertainment love movies. It shows in every disc they release (like last years wonderful “MAD MONSTER PARTY” DVD). And this new release of director Richard Lester’s delightfully enjoyable 70’s comedy/ swashbuckler’s “THE THREE MUSKETEERS” and “THE FOUR MUSKETEERS” in one 2-disc set is yet another example of their care and love. This is a wonderful release and a superior job over the DVD’s Fox-Lorber have had on the market for the last couple of years. No one ever mentioned it (maybe nobody noticed it), but the Fox-Lorber DVD of “3 MUSKETEERS” was missing about 1 minute of footage in a scene between Charlton Heston and Christopher Lee. These new discs have the complete versions of both films and they look and sound great! For the first time they are presented in anamorphic widescreen in their proper aspect-ratio (full screen versions are also included but I haven’t yet viewed them so I can’t comment on them). The extras are also very nice. Two half hour documentaries on each disc includes interviews with stars Raquel Welch, Christopher Lee, Charlton Heston, Michael York and Frank Finlay and producers Ilya Salkind and Pierre Spengler. Trailers, tv spots, radio spots, photo & poster galleries and star biographies (that are actually informative and worth reading) round out this very pleasing package! Buy it, watch it and enjoy!

Anchor Bay deserves a great deal of credit for this informative and entertaining double feature of the two classic Musketeer films from the early 1970s.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Complete Musketeers! Click Here

Originally planned as one long epic movie (including a then standard intermission in the middle) the decision was made at some point during the production of THE THREE MUSKETEERS that they would either have one four hour movie or two separate movies. Rather than cut out some of the fantastic scenes that had been shot to make the movie more manageable the production company made the more sensible decision to cut the production in two releasing THE THREE MUSKETEER’ one year and then THE FOUR MUSKETEERS shortly after.

Not everyone involved in the production of the movie was happy about the decision. Actress Faye Dunaway publicly stated that (had she known about the splitting of the movie into two) she would have refused to do it since her role in the first was so small. The move led to some litigation and was eventually settled but today movie contracts include what is termed “The Salkind Clause” (named after the Salkind’s who produced the MUSKETEER movies) to protect actors from such moves.

It is perhaps for this reason that Faye Dunaway is one of the only still living members of the main cast who does not appear on camera for the excellent hour-long documentary THE SAGA OF THE MUSLETEERS that Anchor Bay has put together for this release.

Perhaps a deliberate reflection of the movie (or perhaps simply due to limited space on the DVDs) the documentary is split into two half-hour parts on each disc. Recounting their memories of the production are actors Charlton Heston, Raquel Welch, Michael York, Frank Finlay and Christopher Lee who cover nearly every aspect of the production from their casting to some of the close calls and injuries the actors sustained performing their own stunts and swordflighting with real, very lethal swords.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Complete Musketeers! Click Here

Lee, himself an expert swordsman, had to remind a rather over enthusiatic Oliver Reed (who abandoned the staged moves for a fight for some more improvised swings) that it was “only a movie.”

Also on camera for interviews are producers Ilya Salkind and Pierre Spengler (who would both go on to produce SUPERMAN) who discuss not only the actual production of the movies but also where the initial idea came from and the recruiting of Director Richard Lester. Salkind recounts how Lester initially turned down the invitation to direct the movie, referring to it as “a children’s book” (as it was seen at the time). It was not until Salkind actually sent him a copy of the actual Alexandre Dumas novel that Lester became excited by the prospect of directing the adaptation.

With a screenplay by George MacDonald Fraser (of the FLASHMAN novels and later of 1983’s OCTOPUSSY) these two movies work remarkably well. Even though there are some surprising stylistic differences (surprising since it was originally meant as one movie). The first movie is definitely more comic in tone and the second darker and more dramatic. This is not to say the second movie is lacking in humor - just witness the Musketeers eating lunch as the prefer for battle with the Protestants.

Of the two I actually prefer the second movie much more because I feel the characters are more drawn out and the intrigue more involving, The climatic sword fight and Oliver Reed-Faye Dunaway subplot are both highlights in my opinion. The second movie also features the shocking deaths of two of the more likeable major characters.

Overall, a fantastic job by Anchor Bay. One can only hope that the third movie in the series, 1989’s THE RETURN OF THE MUSKETEERS which was also directed by Richard Lester and included the majority of the original cast, will one day be released on DVD.

Well recommended.

After seeing this miniseries and the original David Lynch theatrical release, I felt compelled to read the book and settle some plot inconsistencies (i.e. where did the weirding weapons go and where the heck was Duncan Idaho really supposed to die? In the Atreides compound during the initial Harkonnen attack or blown to bits by Harkonnen patrols in the desert spiriting Paul and his mother to safety?). The Sci-Fi series got it right.

I did not find Allec Newman annoying as some people did. Sure, he was wooden, but Paul was schooled in the controlling of his own emotions by his mother so that they did not betray him. After the Harkonnen attack his ruthless, unemotional behavior became more pronounced as he was immersed in the grim Fremen culture.

In terms of following the original story, the Sci-Fi Channel series is superior to Lynch’s version. Sure, nobody seems to be able to get the fact that Paul Atreides is supposed to be 14-15 when the story starts and that he is described as being much darker complected than either actor who has played him in the past, but things actually happened in the sequence they were supposed to in the miniseries. People die where they are supposed to and events take place in the proper sequence.

Another nice element of the miniseries was the use of knives. Everybody has knives in the miniseries, just like in the book, where knives play an important part of Fremen culture. In the miniseries, characters are more likely to duke it out up close with knives than shoot blasts from weirding modules (which aren’t even in the book).

Karel Dobry’s Dr. Kynes and P.H. Moriarty’s Gurney Halleck (characters who, despite their importance to Herbert’s original story, were glossed over in Lynch’s version of “Dune”) are both given the attention they deserve in the miniseries. I thought both actors did well, as did the actor who played Stilgar (Uwe Ochsenknecht). I liked both Ochsenknecht and Dobry’s quiet, understated menace. Despite their lack of emotion and stoic demeanor, you could instantly recognize them as the most dangerous men in the room. In the miniseries Gurney Halleck looks and feels like the battle-hardened ex-slave who would die for his Duke. If anything, Patrick Stewart’s portrayal in the movie (when his character was on screen) was too “clean” to be Gurney Halleck.

Hey, Raban even had some dialogue in the miniseries (like he did in the book) instead of wandering around and giggling perversely while eating some indescribable meat product like he did in Lynch’s movie. Feyd even gets to do things in the miniseries besides offering Sting’s characteristic leer of the Lynch interpretation. Sure, his clothes stunk in the miniseries, but he was shown as being much more dangerous (both physically and mentally) in the miniseries than Sting was in the movie version. Stepping out of a steam-bath and cocking on eyebrow on cue don’t concern me as much as the man who looks harmless and has terrible fashion sense, but is a cold-blooded killer. Ian McNiece surprised me as Baron Harknonnen, since I’m used to him in more effeminate, comedic roles. I thought he did a fine job as the Baron, mixing the vicious with the pathetic (now if only I hadn’t seen quite so much of him wearing nothing but his suspensor harness…).

The miniseries does have its weaknesses. Once again, the actor who played Yueh fell short. I never once saw the tattoo Yueh had on his forehead that signified his imperial conditioning. How many times is this blasted tattoo mentioned in the book? William Hurt has as much intensity as a corpse. I do think that Lynch’s movie made the Bene Gesserit more menacing with their bald heads and black gowns. The Bene Gesserit attire of the miniseries was laughable. In fact, hats were pretty terrible throughout the series. I also like Lynch’s interpretation of guild navigators and Harkonnen “garbage bags with green eyeholes” shock troops. However, other visual elements, like the stillsuits (the primary wardrobe of the second half of the story) and vehicles, are more accurate in the Sci-Fi miniseries.

Is it perfect? No. Was it enough to cause me to buy a copy of the book to find out if they did a better/worse job? Yes. Is it more faithful to the original story? Yes.

David Lynch’s 2-hour feature film (later extended to 3 hours) and John Harrison’s 6-hour TV miniseries each have very different interpretations of Frank Herbert’s masterful sci-fi novel “Dune”. Separately, neither effort adequately captures Herbert’s vision of humanity and struggles for power in the far distant future; but each work brings varying degrees of depth to the screen, giving the viewer a glimpse of what Herbert envisioned.

Strengths of Harrison’s TV miniseries interpretation:

* Better character development: especially Duke Leto Atreides (William Hurt), Princess Irulan Corrino (Julie Cox), Padishah-Emperor Shaddam Corrino IV (Giancarlo Giannini) and Stilgar (Uwe Ochsenknecht).
* A more comprehensive telling of the story: including the Corrino family, the ordinary lives of the Fremen, the ties between the Harkonnen and Atreides families, and the influence of the Bene Gesserit. Strangely, Paul is never called Usul.
* Better special effects and panoramic views, except for the often-used surrealistic lighting.
* Little use of stock footage scenes, which was often used by Lynch.

Strengths of Lynch’s feature film interpretation:
* Better costumes overall, especially the all of the uniforms and Fremen stillsuits, which, unlike the TV miniseries, looked as if they would actually work.
* Better portrayal of the Mentat.
* Hearing the thoughts of the characters added an extra element.
* Better acting overall: especially Lady Jessica (Francesca Annis), Baron Harkonnen’s doctor (Leonardo Cimino), Shadout Mapes (Linda Hunt), Paul ‘Muad’Dib’ Atreides (Kyle MacLachlan), Baron Harkonnen (Kenneth McMillan), Duke Leto (Jürgen Prochnow) and Gurney Halleck (Patrick Stewart).

Someone who hasn’t read Herbert’s novel and only sees Lynch’s feature film may not understand the story, but someone who hasn’t read the novel but only sees Harrison’s TV miniseries will probably understand the story without difficulty. Anyone who has read the novel and sees either live-action interpretation will probably be disappointed to some degree by both, but each one can be appreciated for what each brings to the screen. The acting from Alec Newman as Paul ‘Muad’Dib’ Atreides was by no means perfect in the TV miniseries, but did shed a different light on the character from Kyle MacLachlan.

Overall, I give Harrison’s TV miniseries version of “Dune” a rating of 4 out of 5 stars. It is interesting to speculate how David Lynch would have added more to his film if he had been able to create a more comprehensive piece like the TV miniseries, as well as use CGI special effects and the best actors from both. Clearly, each screen interpretation shows what each director was able to accomplish with his available resources and artistic license.

THE DVD EXTRAS

Like the first season, this DVD set clearly has one of THE best DVD extras packages you’ll ever see.

COMMENTARY, NOTES and BLOOPERS

ALL EPISODES include commentary from producers Bill Panzer and David Abramowitz and “Watcher” notes. The commentaries provide great insight into each episode’s production. The “Watcher” notes give more insight into “Highlander” canon with reference to events and characters. In addition, several episodes also include deleted scenes/blooper footage.

ADRIAN PAUL COMMENTARY

Disc 3’s episodes also include audio and video commentary by series’ star Adrian Paul. Decent stuff.

COLLECTIBLES AND CONTESTS

This DVD set includes a collector’s edition Highlander medallion. You can mail away for a medallion holder that comes with Season One’s medallion. Also included are entry forms for the Highlander sweepstakes contest.

DISC 8: EXTRAS

Included on Disc 8 are:

Trivia Game: Test your Highlander knowledge (or pick up some).

Director and Actor Bios: Filmographies for ALL actors and directors who appeared in/worked on Season Two.

Scripts: Finalized shooting scripts for ALL 22 episodes in season two. A Highlander completist’s dream as it includes all the lines and stage directions.

Shooting Schedules: Another nifty production document that details the shooting schedule for several episodes. More great insight to the film biz.

THE VERDICT

Lovers of action-adventure and romance are bound to fall in love with this series. The “historical” flashbacks to earlier time periods in the Immortal’s lives are awe-inspiring. The martial arts and swashbuckling action will fix most people’s action cravings and the countless romantic “love scenes” featured in the series will reel in the ladies too. If you’ve never been exposed to world of Highlander before check this series out and see what Highlander fans have known for years, “In The End, There Can Be Only One” — and this series is it!!

Highest Recommendation

Season Two marks a turning point in the Highlander series, when the writers finally break out of the territory established in the original Highlander movie and introduce new ideas. The Watchers are introduced, a secret society of people who have been watching and recording the Immortal’s deeds for centuries. While I can’t help but wonder if this idea was liberally borrowed from Anne Rice’s books, the Watchers quickly became my favorite aspect of the show, especially the tentative and growing friendship between Duncan McLeod and his watcher, ultra-cool guy Joe Dawson. It really adds depth to Duncan’s character to see him interact with someone not in “the biz” from whom he has nothing to hide. In fact, Dawson may know McLeod better than anyone ever has, including Duncan himself. The abrupt death of Tessa during Season 2 may be upsetting to some fans, but her presence in McLeod’s life stagnated the character, and now he is free to go out in new and exciting directions.
